The plant itself is not poisonous, nor does it contain any poisonous elements; is safe to touch and pick. However, it is very dangerous in the aspect that it can cause detrimental costly damage. Japanese Knotweed grows at an extremely quick pace. In ten weeks it can grow 3/4 metres and in the summer, it is possible for knotweed to grow up to 10cm a day. Even from the remains, such as a miniscule fragment from the root, it is possible for this plant to regrow. Therefore, making it difficult to remove it without a professional.
