Bamboo - What you need to know

Often planted in gardens due to its ornamental appearance and its ability to provide an effective privacy screen, bamboo can become a highly invasive weed and can be difficult to get rid of.

In a similar way to Japanese knotweed, Bamboo has been known to break through buildings and structures, and ruin gardens. There are many varieties of bamboo, which are often grouped into two categories – Running Bamboo and Clumping Bamboo.

Running Bamboo Types

Running bamboo types include Phyllostachys, Sasaella, Pseudosasa, Sinobambusa and Bashania. Running bamboo types are the more invasive types of bamboo due to their long rhizomes, which help them to grow quickly and colonise new areas. This means that they can appear anywhere in the garden, or even in neighbouring land or hard standing areas such as patios.

Clumping Bamboo Types

Clumping bamboo types include Bambusa, Fargesia, Schizostachyum and Dendrocalamus, which are less invasive than running bamboo and create large root balls. These forms of bamboo can also grow out of control but do not spread as much as the running bamboo types.

There are two main ways of removing Bamboo entirely, through herbicide treatment or through full excavation. At Japanese Knotweed Expert, we carry out a combined approach – initially the bamboo is excavated by our team of professionals using the appropriate machinery and tools, depending upon the accessibility of the site.

To excavate the Bamboo, the canes would initially be cut down to ground level and disposed of at a suitable waste facility. The rhizomes would then be removed and disposed of in the same manner. Following the completion of the excavation, a number of follow up visits are completed to treat the area with herbicides to ensure that the Bamboo does not return.

Although Bamboo can be highly invasive and cause damage to both structures and hard standing areas if left uncontrolled, it can be dealt with effectively and quickly by a professional invasive weed removal company. Japanese Knotweed Expert can help guide you through the process of identifying and removing bamboo, helping to make the process as stress free as possible and resulting in full removal of the Bamboo.
