Japanese Knotweed is a rapidly spreading plant due to its fast-growing roots. With its shoots starting to appear early spring, it can reach heights of several metres by the end of summer. It has been possible to identify Japanese knotweed throughout the entirety of the UK since its first identification in 1850, with its network expanding at an alarming rate. Whilst there is not particular patterns to the knotweed’s presence, identified in certain areas of the UK are Japanese Knotweed hotspots.

1. Swansea

As the second largest city of Wales Swansea tops the list with approximately 1,350 reported infestations.

 

2. Bristol

Bristol has been found to be the second most affected place by Japanese knotweed in the UK. Altogether finding that Bristol has 1,121 infestation cases of Japanese knotweed.

 

3. Bolton

Bolton gained the title of being the ‘Japanese knotweed capital of the UK’ in 2022 and is now 3rd on the 2024 list with 1,010 infestations being reported.

 

4. Cardiff

Since 2021 Cardiff has been sat at 4th place on the Japanese Knotweed Hotspot list, with approximately 400 reported infestations.

  

5. Preston 

We have seen a rise in the number of Japanese Knotweed infestations in Preston this year.

 

 

6. Nottingham
